12 Ιουλίου 1904, μια μέρα σαν σήμερα πριν 111 χρόνια γεννιόταν στην Χιλή ο Pablo Neruda. Νομπελίστας, βραβευμένος με το Διεθνές Βραβείο για την Ειρήνη 1950, απο τους σημαντικότερους σύγχρονους ποιητές, ύμνησε την Νότια Αμερική, την φύση, τους λαούς και τους αγώνες τους ενάντια στην καταπίεση και την αποικιοκρατία, παλαιότερη και τωρινή. Υπηρέτησε σε πολλές διπλωματικές θέσεις, διατέλεσε Γερουσιαστής του Κ.Κ. Χιλής, και διώχθηκε απο τις δικτατορίες των Βιδέλα και Πινοτσέτ.

Στην Ελλάδα, τον τραγουδήσαμε, και μερικοί ακόμα τον τραγουδάμε, στο περίφημο Canto General, του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη.

 

July 12 1904, on a day like today 111 years ago, Pablo Neruda was born in Chile. Nobel Prize winner, awarded with the International Prize for Peace 1950, one of the most significant poets of modern times. He sang of South america, her nature, peoples and their struggles against colonialism and neo-colonialism. He served in various diplomatic posts, senator for the Communist Party of Chile, he was persecuted by both the dictatorships of Videla and Pinochet.

In Greece, we sung hiw “Canto General” -some of us still sing it- to the music of Mikis Theodorakis.

Στις αμμουδιές του Μαγγελάνου σε βρήκαμε, κουρασμένη

θαλασσοπόρε, ακίνητη

στην καταιγίδα που τόσες φορές τα γλυκά δίδυμα

στήθη σου αψήφισαν, σκίζοντάς την με τις ρώγες σου.

Σε σηκώσαμε άλλη μια φορά πάνω απο τις Νότιες θάλασσες, μα τώρα

είσουν o επιβάτης στο σκοτάδι, στις γωνιές, ίδια

με το σιτάρι και το μέταλο που φύλαγες

στα πλατειά νερά, τυλιγμένη στο θαλασσινό σκοτάδι.

Σήμερα είσαι δικιά μου, θεά που το γιγάντιο άλμπατρος καθώς περνούσε

πετώντας έξησε με τ΄απλωμένα φτερά του,

σαν ένας μανδύας μουσικής που διευθύνεται στη βροχή

απο τα τυφλά, περιπλανόμενα ξύλινα βλέφαρά σου.

 

 

 

Όταν οι άγγελοι κι οι βασίλισσες που γεννήθηκαν μαζί σου σκεπάστηκαν

με μούσκλια, κοιμήθηκαν προορισμένοι

να μείνουν ακίνητοι με τιμητική φρουρά νεκρών,

εσύ σκαρφάλωσες στην λεπτή πλώρη του πλοίου,

και, άγγελος και βασίλισσα και κύμα, είσουν ο σεισμός

της γης.

 

Το τρέμουλο των ανθρώπων σηκώθηκε

 

μέχρι τον ευγενή χιτώνα σου με τα σαν μήλα ξύλινα στήθη

ενώ τα χείλη σου – Ω γλύκα!- υγράνθηκαν

απο άλλα φιλιά αντάξια του άγριου στόματός σου.

From the sands of Magellan we salvaged you, exhausted

voyager, immobile

 

beneath the storm your sweet twofold breast so many times

defied dividing itself between your nipples.

We lifted you again over the Southern waters, but now

you were the passenger in darkness, of angles, one

with the wheat and the metal you guarded

on the wide water, enveloped by oceanic night.

Today you are mine, goddess whom the giant albatross

grazed with its wingspan extended in flight,

like a cloak of music conducted in rain

by your blind wandering eyelids of timber.

Rose of the sea, bee more pure than dream,

almond-woman who from the roots

of a holm-oak peopled with cantos

made yourself form, force of the nest-filled foliage,

mouth of tempests, delicate sweetness,

that could go conquering the light with its thighs.

When the angels and the queens born with you,

covering themselves with moss, slumbered, fated

to the immobility the dead guard with honour,

you climbed to the narrow prow of the ship

and angel and queen and wave, you were the earth’s tremor.

Man’s shudderings climbed to your

noble tunic with its apple-wood breast.

while your lips oh sweetness! were moistened

by other kisses worthy of your wild mouth.
