Frederic Edwin Church visited Greece in 1869 and spent several weeks in Athens. Although he intended to paint a large canvas of the Parthenon while still in Greece, it was not until 1871 that a commission from the financier and philanthropist Morris K. Jesup permitted Church to begin this large canvas. The picture was first exhibited in New York at Goupil’s Gallery in 1872 where it was highly acclaimed.

Ο Frederic Edwin Church επισκέφθηκε την Ελλάδα και έμεινε στην Αθήνα για μερικές εβδομάδες το 1869. Αν και είχε την πρόθεση να ζωγραφίσει έναν μεγάλο σε καμβά πίνακα του Παρθενώνα, δεν ήταν μέχρι το 1871 που του ανατέθηκε η εργασία από τον χρηματιστή και φιλάνθρωπο Morris K. Jesup. Ο μεγάλος σε μέγεθος πίνακας εκτέθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Νέα Υόρκη στην Goupil’s Gallery το 1872 όπου απέσπασε την ενθουσιώδη αποδοχή και θαυμασμό όλων.
