20 Οχτωβρίου 1947, στις ΗΠΑ η Επιτροπή Αντι-αμερικανικών Δράσεων (HUAC) αρχίζει την έρευνα για πιθανή κομμουνιστική επιρροή στην βιομηχανία του κινηματογράφου. Είναι η εποχή του “Ερυθρού Τρόμου”, της αντι-κομμουνιστικής παράνοιας με εμπνευστή τον Γερουσιαστή Joseph McCarthy. Το όνομά του, “Μακαρθισμός”, θα δωθεί σε μια ολόκληρη εποχή διωγμών των “αντιφρονούντων”, που θα επεκταθεί και στην χώρα μας ακόμα.

Φοβούμενη κάποια συνομωσία που θα προπαγάνδιζε τον κομμουνισμό μέσα απο τις ταινίες του κινηματογράφου, η επιτροπή θα καλέσει ως μάρτυρες πάνω απο 40 ηθοποιούς, σκηνοθέτες, σεναριογράφους και διευθυντές στούντιο. Θα τους ανακρίνει πιεστικά σε σχέση με τα πολιτικά τους φρονήματα και θα ζητήσει ονόματα κομμουνιστών και “συνοδοιπόρων”.

Στις 24 Οχτωβρίου 1947, μια μέρα σαν σήμερα πριν 68 χρόνια, 80 διασημότητες του Χόλυγουντ μεταξύ των οποίων οι Χάμφρεϋ Μπόγκαρντ, Λωρήν Μπακώλ, Τζην Κέλυ, Φρανκ Σινάτρα, Τζον Χιούστον, Γκράουτσο Μαρξ και Ντάνυ Καίη υπογράφουν μια διαμαρτυρία με την οποία καταγγέλλουν ως αντι-Αμερικανική την ίδια την επιτροπή, καθώς ερευνά τα πολιτικά πιστεύω των πολιτών.

Την ίδια μέρα καταθέτουν στην επιτροπή ως “φιλικοί μάρτυρες” ο Walt Disney και ο Ronald Reagan. Ο Ρήγκαν θα καταθέσει πως μια “μικρή κλίκα” κομμουνιστών “επιχειρούν να ασκήσουν διασπαστική επίδραση” στο σωματείο των ηθοποιών. Ο Ντίσνεϋ θα δηλώσει πως αισθάνεται ιδιαίτερα απειλούμενος και ευάλωτος στην “Ερυθρή Απειλή”, επειδή ο επικεφαλής του συνδικάτου των εργαζομένων στα στούντιό του, κάποιος Sorrell, είναι κομμουνιστής. Το οτι είναι κομμουνιστής το ξέρει επειδή έχει δει το όνομά του σε διάφορες δράσεις και έντυπα που στρέφονται ενάντια στην επιχείρησή του κι επειδή έχει σπουδάσει σε σχολή κινηματογράφου στην Μόσχα.

Αυτά, την ίδια ώρα που Ναζί ή συνεργάτες δοσίλογοι θα βρούν άσυλο στις ΗΠΑ και άλλες δυτικές χώρες ή που θα μείνουν στο απυρόβλητο και θα βρούν άσυλο στις ΗΠΑ και άλλες δυτικές χώρες ή που θα μείνουν στο απυρόβλητο και θα επανενταχθούν άσπιλοι στην κοινωνία.

On October 20 1947, members of the House Un-American Activities Committee began an investigation into alleged communist influences in the film industry as the post-World War II “Red Scare” ramped up towards its peak. It will be an era era marked by anti-communist paranoia and it will come to be known as “McCarthyism” after Senator Joseph McCarthy. Fearing a conspiracy that would inject propaganda into productions and recruit movie-going Americans to communist causes, the committee subpoenaed more than 40 actors, directors, writers and studio executives, whom they grilled about their political affiliations and asked to name names of other Hollywood communists.

On October 24, 1947, a day like today 68 years ago, 80 Hollywood celebrities — including Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Gene Kelly , Groucho Marx, Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye and John Huston — will sign a petition denouncing the committee as un-American itself for probing the politics of individual citizens,

But the anti-communist momentum of the day carried the hearings forward. Some of those subpoenaed cooperated fully with the committee, confirming its fears that subversives were at work in Hollywood. These “friendly witnesses” included Ronald Reagan, who testified that a “small clique” of communists “have attempted to be a disruptive influence” within the Screen Actors Guild, and Walt Disney, who declared that they had been behind a strike at his studio. Disney felt particularly vulnerable to the Red Menace, according to his testimony, in which he alleged that one communist agitator, the union organizer Herbert Sorrell, swore “he would make a dust bowl out of my plant if he chose to.” Disney knew Sorrell was a communist, he said, because of “having seen his name appearing on a number of Commie front things,” which then went on to smear Disney’s name.

All that at the same time that prominent Nazis and collaborators will either find an asylum in the US and other western countries, or will remain unchallenged and become accepted as honorable members of society.
