29 Μαρτίου 1973. Μια μέρα σαν και σήμερα πριν 44 χρόνια τα τελευταία Αμερικανικά στρατεύματα αποχωρούν απο το Νότιο Βιετνάμ βάζοντας τέλος στην οχτάχρονη πολεμική εμπλοκή τους στο Βιετναμ.

Το 1961, ύστερα απο δυο δεκαετίες κάθε λογής έμμεσης βοήθειας ο πρόεδρος Κένεντυ είχε στείλει την πρώτη στρατιωτική δύναμη, για να ενισχύσει δικτατορικό καθεστώς του Νότιο Βιετνάμ, ενάντια στο κομμουνιστικό Βόρειο Βιετνάμ.

Την άνοιξη του ’69, καθώς οι διαμαρτυρίες ενάντια στον πόλεμο κλιμακώνονταν παγκόσμια, ο πρόεδρος Νίξον άρχισε την σταδιακή απόσυρση των 550.000 Αμερικανών στρατιωτών, εντείνοντας όμως τους βομβαρδισμούς. Η εξάπλωση των αεροπορικών επιχειρήσεων σε Λάος και Καμπότζη οδήγησε σε νέο κύμα παγκόσμιων διαμαρτυριών. Τέλος, τον Ιανουάριο 1973 ΗΠΑ, Βόρειο και Νότιο Βιετνάμ και οι Βιετκόνγκ υπέγραψαν την συνθήκη ειρήνης του Παρισιού.

Ήταν μια εποχή που την ζήσαμε έντονα, όσοι είμαστε τότε στα 20 ή και τα 30 μας. Το αντιπολεμικό κίνημα της εποχής καθώς κι εκείνο των Πολιτικών Δικαιωμάτων τραγουδήθηκαν απο φωνές όπως των Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary και… και… και…

29 March 1973. The last American troops leave South Vietnam. America’s direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end.

In 1961, after two decades of indirect military aid, U.S. President John F. Kennedy sent the first large force of U.S. military personnel to Vietnam to bolster the ineffectual autocratic regime of South Vietnam against the communist North.

In the spring of 1969, as protests against the war escalated in the United States, U.S. troop strength in the war-torn country reached its peak at nearly 550,000 men. Richard Nixon, the new U.S. president, began U.S. troop withdrawal and “Vietnamization” of the war effort that year, but he intensified bombing. Subsequently the bombings were expanded to Laos and Cambodia which led to new waves of protests in the United States

and elsewhere. Finally, in January 1973, representatives of the United States, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong signed a peace agreement in Paris, ending the direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War.

The anti-war as well as the Civil Rights movements of the ‘60s were sung by the voices of Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary and many more.
