Since the beginning of the economic crisis in Greece -a few years now-one of the problems identified was that of the “grey economy”.

Goods and services were sold and rendered without any tax being charged or collected and consequently not reported to the state.

So in order to collect the much needed lost tax revenue a way had to be invented to bring everyone in line.

Enter the campaign of the “receipts” which in essence advised and encouraged the citizenry to demand a legitimate receipt or refuse to pay if the vendor didn’t oblige.

Of course the campaign had to inform also the millions of tourists that visit Greece. An advertising campaign called “apodixi parakalo”(receipt please) was widely circulated in all materials tourists came in contact with telling them that they didn’t have to pay if they asked for a receipt and weren’t given one.

Now, how effective was the measure? Well, it brought some awareness to the citizens -that we are in all this mess together and we have to change -and additional tax revenue in the state’s coffers, so it was somewhat successful.

We’re on the right track but more needs to be done.
Old ways and habits are hard to break!
