Back 80 years to February 20, 1939.

At Madison Square Garden we have a rally by approximately 22,000 members of the German-American nazi group “Bund”.

This group had about 20,000 members with more than 100,000 sympathizers. They were all ordinary workers like butchers, bakers, steel workers, housekeepers, etc. Most were part of the more than 400,000 Germans that immigrated to the U.S. between 1919-1933 when the German economy was in shambles devastated by the First World War.

This particular nazi organization sponsored several summer camps for families and children with the largest being “Camp Siegfried” in Yaphank, N.Y. and where its main thoroughfare was named “Adolf Hitler Street”!

Their leader was a heavy-set, thick spectacled type named Fritz Kuhn who had nothing in common with his German prototype leader even though they called him the “American Hitler”!

He worked as a chemist for the “Ford Motor Co.” until his firing for his anti-Semitic politicking, despite Henry Ford’s own anti-Semitism.

Anywho, when the nazi gathering was learned, a lot of New Yorkers, amongst them and in the forefront the small and insignificant Socialist Workers Party and of course some Jewish organizations urged N.Y. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia to pull their permit. However, even though LaGuardia was personally anti-Nazi and his mother Jewish, he advocated the First Amendment of the Constitution which guarantees the freedom of speech for all. He told them that “that is the difference between our way of doing things and their way of doing things” and he ordered massive mounted police presence to keep the affair peaceful.

That left the anti-Nazis with no alternative but to organize a counter-protest outside MSG.

More than 100,000 showed up with signs that read “Stop the Fascists”, “Give me a mask, I can’t stand the smell of Nazis”, “Smash Anti-Semitism”, “Don’t wait for the concentration camps – act now” and many more.

Back in the Garden now the last speaker was Kuhn. As he started, all of a sudden a man charged the stage and before reaching Kuhn was apprehended by his guards and beaten until the police arrived. At their hands he had his clothes torn and also suffered a broken nose. He later was charged for disorderly contact and fined $25. His name was Isadore Greenbaum. The following year this man enlisted in the American Army to go fight the Nazis in Europe.

Kuhn’s speech ended at 11pm and as they were leaving a few more altercations between them and the anti-Nazi demonstrators took place and the police were able to brake it up after arresting some of them.

At midnight 8th Avenue was clear and quiet.

The next morning the newspaper of the Socialist Workers Party, which had organized the counter protest, reported that after the rally, two “Bund” members were overheard discussing the events as they were coming down the Garden’s stairs and one saying “It was worth 40 cents- (the ticket to attend the rally)- just to see the cops beat that fellow on the stage” -this by the way reminds me of the current tenant of the White House- with the other replying “Yes, but all this is just practice for what’s coming”.

A chilling prophesy for the things that did come and….still do.
