ΠΙΝΔΑΡΟΥ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟΝΙΚΟΣ 7ος

Καί καθώς λησμονῆσαν (ΣΣ οι θεοί) νά βάλουνε κλῆρο
γιά τόν Ἥλιο πού τύχαινε τότε νά λείπει
τόν θεό, παραλίγο, τόν ἄμωμο, θ’ ἄφιναν δίχως μερίδιο∙
τούς τό θύμισε ὅμως ἐκεῖνος∙
καί θά ὅριζε ὁ Δίας καινούργια ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς μοιρασιά,
μά ὁ Ἥλιος ἀρνήθηκε∙
γιατί εἶπε πώς βλέπει ἀπ’ τά βάθη τῆς θάλασσας
στόν ὁλόλευκο ἀφρό ν’ ἀνεβαίνει ὁλοένα μιά χώρα
πού ὁ πλοῦτος της μέλλει κοπάδια κι ἀνθρώπους νά θρέψει.
Κι ἀπ’ τή μοίρα τή Λάχεση, μέ τ’ ὁλόχρυσο χτένι,
νά σηκώσει τά χέρια ζητᾶ καί τόν ὅρκο
τῶν θεῶν νά σφραγίσει
συμφωνώντας μαζί μέ τοῦ Κρόνου τόν γιό,
πώς ἡ νῆσος αὐτή στό αἰθέριο τό φῶς σάν βρεθεῖ,
τό δικό του νά εἶναι μερίδιο γιά πάντα.
Καί τά λόγια αὐτά πληρωθῆκαν καί ἀλήθεψαν ὅλα.
τό νησί ἀπ’ τήν ἄρμη τῆς θάλασσας βλάστησε
κι ἀπό τότε δικό του τό ἔχει ὁ πατέρας,
τῶν ὀξειῶν ἡλιαχτίδων ὁ ἄρχοντας
τῶν πυρίπνοων ἵππων ὁ ἀφέντης.

My translation

And because they (the gods) forgot to draw a lot for the Sun
who happened to be away at the time
the immaculate god would have been left without share.
But he reminded them.
and Zeus was about to order a new sharing to begin
but the Sun refused.
Because he said he can see from the bottom of the sea
rising toward the white foam a land
that her wealth was destined to support men and herds of animals
And from Lachesis, the Fate with the golden comb,
he asked that she would raise her hands and to seal
the oath of the gods
agreeing together with the son of Cronos
that when this island comes to the ethereal light
it would be his for ever.
And those words were fulfilled and everything came true.
The island grew from the brine of the sea
and since then it belongs to the father,
the ruler of the sharp sun rays,
the master of the fire breathing horses.
