Για όσους γεννήθηκαν μετά το 1960 ίσως να μη λέει πολλά… ίσως να μην λέει και τίποτα, αν και δεν μπορώ να το φανταστώ. Για τους παλαιότερους όμως η Joan Baez υπήρξε η μεγαλύτερη, η δυνατότερη γυναικεία φωνή της δεκαετίας του ’60, μα και για πολλά χρόνια μετά. Υπήρξε η γυναικεία φωνή μιας περιόδου συνταρακτικής που σημάδεψε την μεταπολεμική ιστορία: Ο πόλεμος του Βιετναμ, η αμφισβήτηση και ο ξεσηκωμός της νεολαίας και των φοιτητών κι απ’ τις δυό μεριές του Ατλαντικού, ο πόλεμος της Αλγερίας, η Σοβιετική εισβολή στην Τσεχοσλοβακία, η χούντα της Αθήνας, η κρίση στην Κούβα, το Kent State, η δολοφονία του Κένεντυ, οι Μαύροι Πάνθηρες, ο Γαλλικός Μάης, ο Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κίγκ και ο αντιρατσιστικός αγώνας στις ΗΠΑ, ο πολιτικοποιημένος φεμινισμός, οι δικτατορίες της Ν. Αμερικής, τα απελευθερωτικά κινήματα της Αφρικής, οι χίπις, τα κοινωνικά κινήματα για ίσα δικαιώματα… Κι η Joan Baez η φωνή της αντίστασης, της διαμαρτυρίας, της καταγγελίας, επι δέκα, δεκαπέντε, είκοσι χρόνια.

It might not mean much to those born after 1960… it might mean nothing at all. But, for those older Joan Baez is the greatest, the strongest female voice of the 60s and even for many years beyond that. She is the female voice of a period that shook the post war history of the world: the Viet Nam war and the mobilization of students against it on both sides of the Atlantic, the independence war of Algeria, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, the dictatorship in Greece, the Cuban crisis, the events at Kent State, the assassination of J.F.K., the Black Panthers, the French May, Martin Luther King and the struggle against racial segregation in the US, the politicization of the feminist movement, the South American dictatorships, the liberation and independence movements in Africa, the hippies and the social movements for equal civil rights… And Joan Baez, the voice of resistance and of protest for ten, fifteen and more years.

Joan Baez was born on a day like today, 9 January 1941. Happy birthday, Joan!
