The Greek Supreme Court ruled yesterday, 26 January, against the extradition of eight Turkish soldiers. Turkey had asked for their extradition, alleging they were involved in the coup attempt of last July. The men had landed a helicopter in northern Greece and asked for political asylum, saying they feared for their lives in Turkey.

“The possibility of their rights being violated or reduced regardless of the degree of guilt or the gravity of the crimes they are accused of does not allow the implementation of extradition rules,” a Supreme Court president said.

It must be noted that Turkish President Erdogan has announced that the Turkish parliament will consider bringing back the death penalty and when it does he will ratify it.

European nations except Belarus will not allow extradition if the death penalty may be imposed on the suspect unless they are assured that the death sentence will not be passed or carried out.
