Arafat – Palestine’s last Hope!, by George Sarafoglou – Αραφάτ, η τελευταία ελπίδα για την Παλαιστίνη, του Γιώργου Σαράφογλου

Πόλεμος στα πεδία των μαχών αλλά και στα γραφεία διαπραγματεύσεων για κάποια πολιτική λύση που όμως συνεχώς του διέφευγε. Σας θυμίζει κάτι;

15 years have gone by from the death of Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat.

A leader who fought a lifetime for a dream! The dream of a liberated Palestine!

It was a fight that took place in the fields of war and in negotiating rooms for a political solution that constantly eluded him.

Does it remind you of something?

The cartoons are from my archives, drawn in 2004.

It was the year that Arafat got sick and was hospitalized in Paris.

The same year that Israeli PM Sharon referred to him as “irrelevant” refusing to speak to him.

And it was the year he died and with him Bush’s “Roadmap to Peace”(in the cartoon “roadmap to pee…”) and all hope for a free Palestine.

It is sad to realize that his grave and as a matter of fact every Palestinians grave is the solution to the age long land dispute.

This small parcel of land is theirs for eternity.

In Arafat’s small parcel of earth buried along with him are the dreams and hopes of his people.

P.S. “Sunrise (or) Sunset?”(From “Fiddler on the roof”)

At the time of the cartoon I pondered the question whether his passing would facilitate(sunrise) the dream of a liberated Palestine or dismiss(sunset) any hope for it.
