27 Σεπτεμβρίου 1889. Μια μέρα σαν σήμερα, η πρώτη Γενική Διάσκεψη Μέτρων και Σταθμών (CGPM) ορίζει το μήκος ενός μέτρου ως την απόσταση μεταξύ δυο σημείων σε μια ράβδο απο κράμμα πλατίνας με 10% ιρίδιο, μετρημένο στο σημείο τήξεως του πάγου.

Αρχικά, το 1793, το μέτρο είχε οριστεί ως 1 δεκάκις εκατομμυριοστό της απόστασης του Ισημερινού απο τον Β. Πόλο.

Μια και μιλάμε για μέτρα να πούμε πως η γιάρδα που χρησιμοποιείται στις αγγλοσαξωνικές χώρες δεν είναι άλλο απο την απόσταση του αντίχειρα μέχρι την μύτη, με τεντωμένο χέρι, του βασιλιά της Αγγλίας Ερικου 1ου (1100 – 1135).

Το 1959 ορίστηκε πως η ίντσα αντιστοιχεί σε 25.4 mm. Μια γιάρδα έχει 12 ίντσες

27 September 1889 – The first General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) defines the length of a meter as the distance between two lines on a standard bar of an alloy of platinum with ten percent iridium, measured at the melting point of ice. Today the metre is defined as the distance travelled by light in a specific fraction – about one three-hundred millionths – of a second.

So long as we are talking about measures let us rememeber that the yard, being used in the anglosaxon world, is nothing else but the distance from the thumb of the outstretched arm to the nose of king Henri I of England. William of Malmesbury’s Deeds of the Kings of England records that during the reign of Henry I “the measure of his arm was applied to correct the false ell of the traders and enjoined on all throughout England.”

In 1959, the imperial inch was re-defined as 0.0254 metres (2.54 centimetres or 25.4 millimetres). One metre is about 3 3⁄8 inches longer than a yard, i.e. about 39 3⁄8 inches.
