Πέρασαν 5 χρόνια απο την σφαγή στην εκκλησία  Emanuel  African  Methodist  Episcopal Church,  μια εκ των παλαιοτέρων αφρικανικών εκκλησιών της Αμερικης,  όπου  9  Αφρο–αμερικανοί δολοφονήθηκαν εν ψυχρώ απο έναν λευκό ρατσιστή.

Ανάμεσα στους σκοτωμένους ήταν και ο πάστορας Clementa C. Pinckney ο οποίος ήταν και πολιτειακός γερουσιαστής.

Την επομένη της σφαγής η αστυνομία συνέλαβε τον 21 χρονο ρατσιστή δολοφόνο ονόματι Dylann Roof.

Όπως απεδείχθει ο Roof ήταν αναμεμειγμένος με ρατσιστές που έχουν σημαία τους την λευκή υπεροχή και προωθούν το μίσος μέσω διαδικτυακών και έντυπων μέσων και χρησιμοποιώντας την συνομοσπονδιακή σημαία και άλλα στοιχεία του Νότου.

Το 2016 καταδικάστηκε για 33 ομοσπονδιακά εγκλήματα μίσους και δολοφονίας. Τον Ιανουάριο του ’17 του επεβλήθη η θανατική ποινή.

Η πολιτεία ξεχωριστά τον καταδίκασε για 9 δολοφονίες και τον Απρίλιο του ’17 ο Roof δήλωσε ένοχος και για τις 9 για να αποφύγει μια δεύτερη θανατική ποινή, οπότε πήγε στα ισόβια.

Αν και αυτόματα παίρνει εφέσεις για την θανατική του ποινή, το ομοσπονδιακό σύστημα δικαιοσύνης τελικά μάλλον θα τον εκτελέσει.

Δυστυχώς ο ρατσισμός σε μια χώρα που είναι καταφύγιο, που είναι  φτιαγμένη από εκατοντάδες διαφορετικές φυλές, που ζουν κι ευημερούν όπως πουθενά αλλού στην υφήλιο, ο ρατσισμός –φυλετικές διακρίσεις ακούγεται πολύ ήπιο– ζει και βασιλεύει!  

Unfortunately in a country that has welcomed and is refuge to hundreds of different races that have chosen to live and prosper here -like in no other country in the world,- racism is thriving!

The morning after the attack, police arrested Dylann Roof in Shelby,  North Carolina;  the 21-year-old white supremacist had attended the Bible study before he committed the shooting.  He was found to have targeted members of this church because of its history and stature. Roof was found competent to stand trial in federal court. 

In December 2016 he was convicted of 33  federal hate crime and murder charges. On January 10, 2017, he was sentenced to death for these crimes.  Roof was separately charged with nine counts of murder in the South Carolina state courts. In April 2017, Roof pleaded guilty to all nine state charges in order to avoid a second death sentence, and was sentenced to life imprisonment for each. He will receive automatic appeals of his death sentence, but may eventually be executed by the federal justice system.

Roof espoused racial hatred in both a website manifesto published before the shooting, and a journal written from jail afterward. Roof posted photos on his website with emblems associated with white supremacy and with the Confederate battle flag. The shooting triggered debate on modern display of the flag and other memorialization of the Confederacy. Following these murders, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to remove the flag from State Capitol grounds.

At the time, this was one of two of the deadliest mass shootings at an American place of worship, alongside a 1991 attack at a Buddhist temple in Waddell, Arizona. Fatalities at the 2017 Sutherland Springs church shooting and the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting have since exceeded it.
