Οι σχέσεις του Σουλτανάτου της Αιγύπτου με του Ιππότες του Αη Γιάννη της Ρόδου δεν ήταν ποτέ καλές. Η πρώτη μεγάλη σύγκρουση ήρθε στα 1365 όταν Μ. Μάγιστρος ήταν ο Raymond Beranger. Τότε, σε συνεργασία με τον Βασιλιά της Κύπρου και τους Βενετσιάνους ο στόλος του Τάγματος επιτέθηκε αιφνιδιαστικά στην Αλεξάνδρεια που είχε γίνει άντρο πειρατών. Ακολούθησε μια απο τις πιο μαύρες σελίδες στην Ιστορία του Τάγματος, καθώς η Αλεξάνδρεια θα καταστραφεί ολοσχερώς, με χιλιάδες νεκρούς και άλλους τόσους σκλάβους.

Οι Αιγύπτιοι δεν ξέχασαν. Στα 1440, αφού κατστρέψει το Καστελλόριζο ο Αιγυπτιακός στόλος βάζει πλώρη για την Ρόδο. Κανένας όμως δεν κοιμάται στην Ρόδο. Ιππότες και οπλισμένοι χωρικοί τους περιμένουν στην παραλία. Οι γαλέρες του Τάγματος τους κυνηγούν μέχρι την απέναντι Μικρασιατική ακτή. Στην ναυμαχία που ακολουθεί ο Αιγυπτιακός στόλος θα τραπεί σε φυγή, αφίνοντας πίσω 400 νεκρούς. 60 Ροδίτες θα πεθάνουν στην μάχη.

Όμως, οι Αιγύπτιοι πάνε γυρεύοντας. Την 1η Αυγούστου 1444, μια μέρα σαν και σήμερα πριν 570 χρόνια, αποβιβάζουν στο νησί 20.000 στρατό. Η ύπαιθρος λεηλατείται. Για την πολιορκία της πόλης ξέρουμε μόνο το πώς τέλειωσε. Ένα περίπου μήνα αργότερα τα αξιοθρήνητα υπολείμματα του Αιγυπτιακού στρατού θα επιστρέψουν στην βάση τους.

Στα 1445 θα υπογραφεί συνθήκη ειρήνης Ρόδου – Αιγύπτου.

The relations of the Sultanate of Egypt with the Knights St. John of Rhodes were never good. The first great clash came in 1365, when Grand Master was Raymond Beranger. In collaboration with the King of Cyprus and Venice, a great fleet is fitted. The target is Alexandria that has become a pirates’ nest. The aim is not only to scare the pirates off the sea lanes, but if possible, also to attack and destroy their base. What follows is one of the darkest pages in the history of the Order. The Knights take the city and then proceed to engage in violence and plunder. When they leave, Alexandria lies in ruins with thousands dead.

Egyptian don’t forget though. In 1440, after razing the island of Castellorizo, the Egyptians fleet moves against Rhodes. Surprise! Nobody is taking siesta! Knights and armed peasants are waiting for them on the beaches. The Order’s galleys come out of the port and chase the Egyptians out to Kos and to the opposite coast of Asia Minor, occupied by the Turks. After a battle lasting all day, the Egyptian fleet is put to rout, leaving behind 400 dead. Sixty on the Rhodian side die in the battle.

Still, the Egyptians go asking for real trouble. In August 1, 1444, on a day like today 570 years ago they sneak back and they land 20,000 troops on the island. As usual, the countryside is plundered.

We do not know the details of this particular siege of the city. We only know how it ended…A month after the siege began, the pitiful remains of the Egyptian army limp back to their base.

In 1445, the Knights sign a new peace treaty with Egypt.
