11 Σεπτέμβρη 1973, Χιλή. Με διευθυντή ορχήστρας τον Χένρι Κίσσινγκερ η CIA ανατρέπει την δημοκρατικά εκλεγμένη κυβέρνηση δίνοντας τέλος σε 150 χρόνια δημοκρατικής διακυβέρνησης. Ο Πρόεδρος Σαλβατόρ Αγιέντε πεθαίνει με το όπλο στο χέρι υπερασπιζόμενος το Προεδρικό Μέγαρο. Τις πρώτες ώρες θα δολοφονηθούν περισσότεροι απο 5.000, ανάμεσά τους ο Victor Jara. Πολλοί άλλοι θα “εξαφανιστούν” στην συνέχεια.

Θα ακολουθήσουν 16 χρόνια τρόμου, 16 χρόνια της πιο στιγνής στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας, με αρχηγό τον Augusto Pinochet.

Σημαντικό ρόλο στο πραξικόπημα έπαιξε η Αμερικάνικη ITT Corporation που την εποχή εκείνη κατείχε το 70% της Τηλεφωνικής Εταιρείας της Χιλής και ήταν μέτοχος της δεξιάς εφ/δας El Mercurio. H CIA την χρησιμοποίησε για να χρηματοδοτεί τους αντιπάλους του Allende.

11 September 1973, Chile. Masterminded by Henry Kissinger, CIA overthrows the democratically elected government, ending nearly 150 years of democratic rule. President Salvador Allende dies gun in hand, defending the Presidential Palace. On the first hours over 5.000 will be murdered, among them folk singer Victor Jara. On the days that follow many more “disappear.”

16 years of terror follow under Pinochet, 16 years of the most repressive military dictatorship.

Primary role in the the coup will be played by the U.S. ITT Corporation which owned 70% of Chitelco, the Chilean Telephone Company, and funded El Mercurio, a Chilean right-wing newspaper. The CIA used ITT as a conduit to financially aid opponents of Allende’s government.
