Turkey’s challenging and disputing international treaties with regards sovereignty and related rights in the Aegean Sea is nothing new. Traditionally, among other things, Turkey claims the existence of “grey zones” which include even some Greek islands and violations of Greek air space and national waters have been a matter of routine by the Turkish air force and navy.
Since the ascent into power of “Sultan” Erdogan such claims and violations have increased multifold and have become a daily phenomenon. The Greek government’s restraint and self-control have so far avoided any “hot incidents”. It is hoped it will still be so. However, it is worth noticing the lack of any reaction both by NATO (Greece and Turkey are “allies”) but also by the EU, as Greek borders happen to be the easternmost borders of the EU.
