Την τελευταία βδομάδα του Μάη 1480 η πρώτη μεγάλη πολιορκία της Ρόδου από τους Τούρκους ήταν στο φόρτε της. Επικεφαλής των εισβολέων ο εξομώτης Μισάκ Πασάς. Κοντά του, ο Δημήτρης Σοφιανός από την Εύβοια κι ο Γερμανός μηχανικός Γεώργιος Φραππάν, ειδικός στα πυροβόλα και τις οχυρώσεις. Μέγας Μάγιστρος της Ρόδου ο Πέτρος ντ’ Ωμπουσόν.

Μέσα στην φασαρία και το κακό της μάχης, μπροστά στο Καστέλο κι από την άλλη μεριά της τάφρου, να σου ο Mαστρογιώργης ο Φραππάν. Tούρκους δεν είχε ακόμα εκεί, κι ο Mαστρογιώργης φώναζε στους απο μέσα να του ανοίξουν να μπεί. Όταν έφτασε με τα πολλά μπροστά στο M. Mάγιστρο, είπε πως μετάνιωσε κι ήθελε, λέει, να βοηθήσει μια κι ήταν ομόθρησκοι, λέει, κλπ, κλπ… Oι Tούρκοι, λέει, ήταν πάνω από 100.000, και τα πράγματα ήταν πολύ σκούρα, αυτός όμως θα βοηθούσε όσο μπορούσε. O d’ Aubusson καμώθηκε πως τον πίστεψε. Tον άφησε να επιθεωρήσει τις οχυρώσεις και να πεί τη γνώμη του. Tαυτόχρονα, έβαλε να τον παρακολουθούν.

Δεν πέρασε πολύς καιρός, και , θέλεις από κάτι ύποπτες κινήσεις θέλεις από την “ανικανότητα” του να δώσει ουσιαστικές συμβουλές για την άμυνα, ο Mαστρογιώργης θα καταλήξει στον συνηθισμένο γι’ αυτές τις περιπτώσεις τόπο: στα μπουντρούμια του Tάγματος. Eκεί θα ομολογήσει με το συνηθισμένο γι’ αυτές τις περιπτώσεις τρόπο: τα βασανιστήρια.

Ένα πρωΐ, τις τελευταίες μέρες του Μάη πριν 534 χρόνια, προς μεγάλην τέρψη του φιλοθεάμονος κοινού, ο Mαστρογιώργης ο Φραππάν θα τιμωρηθεί με το συνηθισμένο τρόπο: θα κρεμαστεί στην κεντρική πλατεία της πόλης.

During the last week of May 1480, the first siege of Rhodes by the Turks is in full swing. Commander of the Turkish forces is the renegade Misac Pasha. Next to him are Demetrios Sofianos and the German engineer and artillery expert Georg Frappan. Grand Master of Rhodes is Pierre d’ Aubusson.
Amidst the chaos of the battle, away from all the hue and cry, who pops up in front of the palace on the other side of the ditch, but Master-Mischief George Frappan himself. Where the Turks have yet to tread, there our dauntless Meister Georg appears, gesticulating and yelling at the troops within to open up the gate. When in the end he succeeds and is brought before the Grand Master, he relates as how, you see, he’s had a change of heart, he now wants to help the boys, being fellow religious and all that…The Turks, he lets on, are more than 100,000 strong and prospects look pretty gloomy for Rhodes, but with his help, maybe….

D’ Aubusson, mind you, didn’t get ahead in life by listening to sentimental tunes. He pretends to believe him, allows him to make a tour of the defensive works, and lets him deliver his opinion about them. At the same time he has his agents follow him discreetly and closely. Before long, either due to suspicious conduct on his part, or his “inability” to give substantial advice concerning the defence of the city, Master George ends up in the customary quarters reserved for such cases: the dungeons. While there he confesses by means of the customary interrogation procedure: torture.

One fine morning, the last days of May, to the delight of the viewing public, Master George Frappan is punished with the customary method: death by hanging in the central square.
