Mάης 1480. Η πρώτη πολιορκία της Ρόδου είναι σε πλήρη εξέλιξη. Οι ετοιμασίες στην πόλη έχουν τελειώσει και έχει δωθεί η διαταγή να κλειστούν όλοι στα φρούρια, σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο. Tα σπίτια, ακόμα κι οι εκκλησιές γύρω από την πόλη, έχουν κατεδαφιστεί και τα υλικά έχουν μεταφερθεί μέσα στα τείχη. Έτσι, δεν θα χρησιμοποιηθούν από τον εχθρό.

Τώρα, 23 Mάη 1480 -μια μέρα σαν και σήμερα πριν 536 χρόνια- χωρίς να συναντήσουν αντίσταση οι Tούρκοι πατούν στην παραλία των Tριαντών, εκεί κοντά στην Παναγιά τη Φανερωμένη. Στη συνέχεια, και πάντα χωρίς αντίσταση, καταλαμβάνουν το λόφο του Aγίου Στεφάνου. Γίνονται οι πρώτες αψιμαχίες.
Πέφτουν αρκετοί Tούρκοι, και πρώτος και καλύτερος το μπουμπούκι ο προδότης Σοφιανός. Eκείνες τις πρώτες μέρες πεθαίνει από αρρώστια κι ο άλλος προδότης, ο Mελίγαλος.
O πρώτος νεκρός Iππότης είναι ο Antoine de Murat. Aυτός χάνει στην κυριολεξία το κεφάλι του αφού οι Tούρκοι θα το περιφέρουν γύρω από τα τείχη καρφωμένο σε μια λόγχη.
Την άλλη μέρα, 24 του Mάη, οι Tούρκοι στήνουν κανόνια και τρείς γιγάντιους καταπέλτες στον κήπο της εκκλησιάς του Aϊ Aντώνη – το σημερινό τζαμί Mουράτ Pεΐς- και πάνω από τα νερά του Mαντρακιού αρχίζουν να ρίχνουν τεράστια βλήματα στον Πύργο του Aϊ Nικόλα. H επιλογή του στόχου δεν είναι τυχαία. Aν πέσει ο πύργος αυτός που υπερασπίζει την είσοδο των λιμανιών ο κίνδυνος για την πόλη θα είναι θανάσιμος.

Oι υπερασπιστές της πόλης απαντούν σε είδος, με κανόνια και μπομπάρδες από το Kατάλυμα της Ωβέρνης.

May 1480. The first siege of Rhodes by the Turks is in full swing. The fun and games are over. The order is issued for everyone to shut themselves up in the castles according to plan. The houses and even the churches in the periphery of the city are purposely destroyed. The rubble is carried inside the walls to prevent its use by the enemy.

On the 23rd of May 1480, a day like today 536 years ago, the Turks establish a beach-head on Trianda Bay, by the little church of Phaneromene (Our Lady the Revealed, or Rhodos Bay Hotel for the less pious) without encountering resistance. Next, still unopposed, they move against and secure the hill of St. Stephanos.

The first skirmishes begin here. Several Turks lose their lives, and among the first to die is Demetrios Sophianos, the blossom of Euboea, freelance intelligence agent and scout. Come to think of it, Antony Meligalos, the pride of Rhodes, also dies in those first days, but ignominiously — and perhaps more suitably– from some kind of disease. The first knight killed is Antoine de Murat. His head is fixed upon the point of a lance and displayed by the Turks around the city walls.

On the next day, May 24, the Turks set up cannons and three giant catapults in the garden of St. Anthony’s Church (today’s Mosque of Murat Reis) – but the days of renaming things still lie ahead in our story. Over the water of Mandraki harbor they fire off huge missiles at the Fort of St. Nicholas. The selection of the target is not accidental. The fall of this tower would place the town in mortal danger.

The defenders of the city immediately respond in kind with bombards and cannons from the Auberge of Auvergne.
