Βαγγέλης Παυλίδης

27 Απριλίου 1521, μια μέρα σαν την σημερινή πριν 495 χρόνια, σκοτωνόταν σε μάχη με τους κατοίκους του Μακτάν των Φιλιππίνων ο Fernão de Magalhães, ο Φερδινάνδος Μαγγελάνος, ηγέτης της αποστολής για τις Ανατολικές Ινδίες που κατέληξε στο πρώτο ταξείδι γύρω απο τον κόσμο. Με πέντε πλοία και περίπου 237 άνδρες έβαλε πλώρη απο την Ισπανία για τον νοτιά, για την Παταγονία. Αφού πέρασε τον πορθμό που σήμερα φέρει το όνομά του βγήκε στον ωκεανό που τον ονόμασε “Ειρηνική Θάλασσα”, τον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό. Μετά απο μια σειρά απο καταιγίδες και ανταρσίες έφτασε στα Νησιά των Μπαχαρικών, στην Ινδονησία. Μετά τον θάνατό του το ταξείδι συνεχίστηκε με το πλοίο και τους ναυτικούς που απόμειναν, για να συμπληρώσουν έτσι τον περίπλου της γης.

Όταν το “Victoria” επέστρεψε στο λιμάνι του στην Ισπανία, είχαν απομείνει μόνο 18 άνδρες, ανάμεσά τους τέσσερεις Έλληνες:

Miguel Sanchez ο Ρόδιος – ναύτης
Νικόλας ο Έλληνας, από το Ναύπλιο – ναύτης

On 27 April 1521, a day like today 495 years ago, Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Filipino natives during the Battle of Mactan while on voyage he had organized in search for a westward passage to the “Spice Islands”. Commanding a fleet of five vessels with a crew of 237 men he headed south through the Atlantic Ocean to Patagonia, passing through the Strait of Magellan -as it is called today- into a body of water he named the “peaceful sea”, the modern Pacific Ocean. Despite a series of storms and mutinies, the expedition reached the Spice Islands in 1521 and after the death of Magellan returned home via the Indian Ocean to complete the first circumnavigation of the globe.

When “Victoria”, the one surviving ship, reached her harbor of departure in 1522 only 18 out of 237 sailors had survived. Among them, four Greeks:
