Μια μέρα σαν σήμερα, την Κυριακή 18 Ιουνίου 1899, ο William H. Richardson έπαιρνε στην Βαλτιμόρη δίπλωμα ευρεσιτεχνίας για το παιδικό καροτσάκι.

Επίσημα πάντα το καροτσάκι είχε εφευρεθεί το 1733 απο τον William Kent για τα παιδία του 3ου Δούκα του Ντεβονσαϊρ. Όμως, το καροτσάκι του Ρίτσαρντσον μπορούσε να γυρίσει ώστε το παιδί να βλέπει αυτόν(ήν) που το έσπρωχνε και οι εμπρός τροχοί γυρνούσαν ελεύθερα -κάπως σαν τα σημερινά καρότσια του σούπερ μάρκετ- ώστε να στρίβει εύκολα.

Αυτά βέβαια επίσημα. Γιατί όπως μας δείχνει και η εικόνα (από το βιβλίο μου Vampir) η εφεύρεση του καροτσιού χάνεται στο βάθος της ιστορίας.

On a day like today, Sunday, 18 June1899, William H. Richardson walked to a Baltimore patent office and patented the Baby Buggy.

Officially the baby carriage was invented by the English architect William Kent in 1733, for the children of the 3rd Duke of Devonshire’s children. However, it was Richardson’s idea to use a special joint to allow a bassinet to be turned to face the operator. and several changes were made that allowed his carriage for the wheel to turn individually, which meant that the vehicle could turn 360 degrees in a smaller turning radius -something like today’s department store’s carts.

All this is the “official” story. However, as can be seen by the picture from my book “Vampir” the invention of the baby carriage is lost in the mist of time.
