4 Νοεμβρίου 1963, Λονδίνο. “Queen’s Royal Variety Performance”, η μεγαλύτερη βραδυά της Βρετανικής “show business”. Το θέατρο Πρίγκηπας της Ουαλίας είναι γεμάτο αστέρια, όπως η Marlene Dietrich και μέλη της “υψηλής” κοινωνίας. Στην πρώτη σειρά η Βασίλισσα Μητέρα και η πριγκήπισα Μαργαρίτα με τον σύζυγό της λόρδο Σνόουντον, ενώ η βασίλισσα απουσίαζε γιατί ήταν έγκυος με τον πρίγκηπα Εδουάρδο.

Οι Beatles, έβδομοι στην σειρά παρουσίασης απο τους 19, ξεκίνησαν με το “From Me to You” και συνέχισαν με το “She Loves You”. Κι ύστερα, ο Τζον Λένον πλησίασε το μικρόφωνο με μια μάλλον χαζή έκφραση και ξύνοντας το κεφάλι του. “Για το τελευταίο μας τραγούδι θα ζητήσω την βοήθειά σας”. Είπε κι έγλειψε τα χείλη. “Όσοι κάθονται στις φτηνές θέσεις, να χτυπάτε παλαμάκια”. Σταμάτησε ενώ η αίθουσα χαχάνιζε. “Και οι υπόλοιποι, να κουδουνίζουν τα κοσμήματά τους”.

Χαμογέλασε προς την κάμερα με τους αντίχειρες σηκωμένους κι ύστερα έσκυψε σαν για να αποφύγει κάποιο χτύπημα, ενώ το θέατρο σειόταν απο τα γέλια.

Η βασίλισσα μητέρα χαμογέλασε συγκαταβατικά, ο Λένον φώναξε “Γεεεεεεε”, η μπάντα το γύρισε στο “Twist and Shout”, ενώ η πριγκήπισα Μαργαρίτα χτυπούσε τα χέρια.

Μετά την συναυλία το γκρούπ συναντήθηκαν για λίγο με την βασίλισσα μητέρα, που θα πει αργότερα “ Ήταν απο τις καλύτερες συναυλίες που έχω παρακολουθήσει. Οι Μπήτλς είναι πολύ ενδιαφέροντες!”

4 November 1963, London. “Queen’s Royal Variety Performance”, the biggest night in British show business, a gala variety show for charity. The Prince of Wales Theatre packed with stars such as Marlene Dietrich and upper class celebrities. On the first row, the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret with her husband Lord Snowdon, and other dignitaries while the Queen did not attend, as she was pregnant with Prince Edward.

The Beatles were the seventh act of the evening (out of 19) and launched their set with “From Me to You.” to continue with “She Loves You”. Then Lennon stepped forward to the mike, scratching his hair and assuming a deadpan expression. “For our last number, I’d like to ask your help.” He licked his lips. “The people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands.” He paused as the audience chuckled. “And the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewelry.” He grinned at the camera with the thumbs up, head ducked as if to avoid a blow, as the laughter rolled in and shook the theater.

The Queen Mother smiled indulgently, raising her fingers and nodding like a good sport, Princess Margaret clapped and Lennon shook his head and cried “Yeahhhhh!” as the band kicked into “Twist and Shout.”

Following the show, the band chatted briefly with the Queen Mother in the receiving line. “It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen,” she was later reported to have raved. “The Beatles are most intriguing.”
