Ο Georg (George) Grosz γεννήθηκε σαν σήμερα, 26 Ιουλίου 1893, και είναι ένας απο τους αγαπημένους μου. Ενας καλλιτέχνης – σκιτσογράφος, ζωγράφος- που τον ανακάλυψα αρκετά νέος και που έγινε για μένα σημείο αναφοράς για την τεχνική του, την δύναμη με την οποία απεικονίζει την καταπίεση και την ανθρώπινη εξαθλίωση, την ηθική κατάπτωση και τον εκφυλισμό στην Γερμανία του μεσοπολέμου. Μέλος του κινήματος Dada. Μέλος του Γερμανικού ΚΚ, απ’ όπου αποχώρησε αφού έζησε πέντε μήνες στην Μόσχα και γνώρισε τούς Λένιν και Τρότσκυ. Φανατικός αντιναζί διώχθηκε και τελικά μετανάστευσε στην Αμερική το 1933. Τα έργα του εκτέθηκαν στην έκθεση “Εκφυλισμένη Τέχνη” του Χίτλερ. Πέθανε στο Βερολίνο το 1959, πέφτοντας στην σκάλα του σπιτιού του επιστρέφοντας απο μια νύχτα οινοποσίας. Είναι να μην τον αγαπάς;

Παραθέτω τον πίνακά του “Εκλειψη Ηλίου” που έχει θέμα τους πολεμοκάπηλους. Με τον πίνακα αυτόν πλήρωσε για την επισκευή του αυτοκινήτου του στην Ν.Υ. Ο πίνακας αργότερα αγοράστηκε απο έναν ελαιοχρωματιστή για $104.00. Το 1968 αποχτήθηκε απο το Heckscher Museum of Art για $15.000 με χρήματα που αποχτήθηκαν με έρανο. Στο τέλος του ’60 αρχές ’70 έγινε σύμβολο της αντίθεσης στον πόλεμο του Βιετ Ναμ.

Το 2006, το μουσείο ανακοίνωσε πως προτίθεται να πουλήσει τον πίνακα για $19.000.000, πράγμα που δεν έγινε ποτέ μετά απο θύελλα διαμαρτυριών.

Georg (George) Grosz was born on a day like today, 26 July 1893. Ηe is one of my all time favorites. An artist -cartoonist, painter- I discovered in my youth and who became for me a point of reference for his technic, his power of presenting the human oppression and misery, as well as the moral degeneration of Germany at that time. A member of the Dada movement, also a member of the Communist Party, which he left after five months in Moscow, during which he met with Lenin and Trotsky. Bitterly anti-Nazi , he was persecuted and finally immigrated to the US in 1933. His works were exhibited in the exhibition “Degenerate Art” organized by Hotler. He died in Berlin in 1959 when he fell down a flight of stairs after a night of drinking. How can I not love him?

The painting “Eclipse of the Sun” was used to pay for a car repair bill. It was later acquired by some house painter to settle a debt of $104.00. The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington purchased the painting in 1968 for $15,000 raising the money by public subscription. As Eclipse of the Sun portrays the warmongering of arms manufacturers, this painting became a destination of protesters of the Viet Nam War in Heckscher Park (where the museum is sited) in the late 1960s and early 70s.

In 2006, the Heckscher proposed selling Eclipse of the Sun for approximately $19,000,000.00 to pay for repairs and renovations to the building. There was such public outcry that the museum decided not to sell, and announced plans to create a dedicated space for display of the painting in the renovated museum
