Ο Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin γεννήθηκε μια μέρα σαν και σήμερα, 1 Φεβρουαρίου 1931. Στις 25 Δεκεμβρίου 199, με την διάλυση της ΕΣΣΔ και την παραίτηση του Μιχαήλ Γκορμπατσώφ, έγινε ο πρώτος Πρόεδρος της Ρώσικης Ομοσπονδίας. Ο Γέλτσιν έγινε δημοφιλής στο εξωτερικό όχι τόσο για την πολιτική του όσο για την φήμη του “χαρούμενου μεθύστακα”. Οι ιστορίες με τα μεθύσια του είναι πολλές και κάποιες απο τις καλύτερες είδαν το φως όταν δημοσιεύτηκαν τα απομνημονεύματα του Μπιλ Κλίντον, στα 2009. Ο Κλίντον διηγείται πώς το 1995 ο Γέλτσιν, όντας στουπί, βρέθηκε με το σώβρακο στον δρόμο έξω απο τον Λευκό Οίκο όπου τον φιλοξενούσαν, προσπαθόντας να βρεί ταξί να τον πάει για πίτσα. Το επόμενο βράδυ, η ασφάλεια του Λευκού Οίκου τον συνέλαβε νομίζοντας πως είναι τρομοκράτης, καθώς παραπατώντας προσπαθούσε να μπεί στο υπόγειο.

Γνωστή είναι ακόμα η ιστορία όπου το 1992 σε επίσημο δείπνο στο Κιργκιστάν που πρόσφατα είχε αποσχιστεί απο την Σοβιετική Ένωση, άρπαξε κάποια στιγμή δυό κουτάλια και άρχισε να παίζει τύμπανο στο φαλακρό κεφάλι του Κιργκίσιου προέδρου, Ασκάρ Ακάγιεφ που καθόταν δίπλα του.

Το 1994 πάλι, βρέθηκε στην Γερμανία για να παραστεί στην αποχώρηση των Ρωσικών στρατευμάτων. Στο επίσημο γεύμα παρουσία του Καγκελάριου Χέλμουτ Κολ, σηκώθηκε και άρχισε να διευθύνει την ορχήστρα και λίγο αργότερα άρχισε να χορεύει μόνος του ανάμεσα στα ζευγάρια σκορπίζοντας φιλιά δεξιά κι αριστερά. Τέλειωσε την παράστασή του βγάζοντας έναν ακαταλαβίστικο λόγο.

Μέσα στην βαρεμάρα και την έλλειψη έμπνευσης και χιούμορ που χαραχτηρίζει την διεθνή πολιτική ο Γέλτσιν αποτέλεσε την εξαίρεση… τουλάχιστον έκανε τον κόσμο να χαμογελάει.

Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin was born on a day like today, 1 February 1931. Upon the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev and the final dissolution of the Soviet Union on 25 December 1991, Yeltsin became the first President of the Russian Federation, serving from 1991 to 1999. Yeltsin gained great popularity abroad, not so much for his politics as for his reputation of a “happy drunk”.

There are numerous stories of Yeltsin escapades and some of the best were revealed in 2009, as the memoirs of Bill Clinton were published. Clinton described how his Russian colleague was found outside in his underpants trying to catch a cab because he was in the mood for pizza. The next night, Secret Service agents thought he was a drunken intruder and arrested him as he was stumbling in the basement of his guest house.

Another memorable moment in Yeltsin career took place when, in 1992, Yeltsin was invited for a state banquet in Kyrgyzstan, that had recently broken away from the Soviet Union. At some point, he grabbed two spoons and begun to play using the Kyrgyz president Askar Akayev‘s bald head as a drum.

In 1994 Yeltsin went to Germany to see the last Russian troups leave the country. In the presence of the German chancellor Helmut Kohl he got quite drunk at lunch and started his own show. First he took on the role of conductor of the band. A little later he started dancing fanatically in between the thunderstruck German dancers. He blew some kisses to his audience and with a muddled speech he finished this epic appearance. Germany was in shock.

Well… in these times where lack of inspiration and humor characterize world politics he was an exception…he at least made a lot of people smile.
