Σήμερα 29 Μαρτίου γιορτάζει το πιάνο! Άρχισε πριν λίγα χρόνια από μερικά άτομα που ήθελαν να αφιερώσουν μια ειδική μέρα όπου θα γιόρταζε το πιάνο. Η μέρα που διάλεξαν είναι η 88η μέρα του χρόνου για τα 88 πλήκτρα που έχει το πιάνο. Αυτήν την ημέρα σε δεκάδες πόλεις του κόσμου οργανώνονται διάφορα ρεσιτάλ.

Η Αθήνα είναι μια από τις πόλεις.

Επί τη ευκαιρία, λοιπόν, θα σας συστήσω σε έναν παγκοσμίου φήμης πιανίστα, τον Claudio Arrau (1903-1991).

Θα μου πείτε πού τον βρήκα; Κατά τύχη σε έναν από τους συχνούς παραθαλάσσιους περιπάτους μου στο Douglaston Manor της Νέας Υόρκης.

Αυτόν τον περίπατο τον κάνω χρόνια τώρα ακολουθώντας σχεδόν πάντα την ίδια διαδρομή.

Συνήθως το βλέμμα μου πέφτει στην θάλασσα με τις πάπιες, τους κύκνους και τους γλάρους. Οι τελευταίοι έχουν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον να τους παρακολουθείς την ώρα του φαγητού τους. Πιάνουν ένα όστρακο ανάμεσα από τις πέτρες, πετάνε λίγα μέτρα ψηλά και το αφήνουν από το ράμφος τους να πέσει στις πέτρες. Καμιά φορά το ρίχνουν και δεύτερη φορά για να ζαλιστεί και ν’ανοίξει ή να σπάσει για να το φάνε. Κάπως έτσι περπατώ, χαζεύω, σκέπτομαι και ξεκαθαρίζει το μυαλό.

Μια μέρα πρόσεξα στην άκρη του δρόμου- στης θάλασσας την μεριά  – έναν μικρό βράχο με μια πλάκα επάνω του αφιερωμένη στον Claudio Arrau του οποίου το σπίτι βρισκόταν ακριβώς απέναντι από το βραχάκι.

Πριν 5-6 χρόνια μάλιστα το παλιό σπίτι του είχε κατεδαφιστεί και στους περιπάτους μου έβλεπα ένα νέο και ωραίο σπίτι να κτίζεται στην θέση του προφανώς από νέους ιδιοκτήτες. Η φωτογραφία που παραθέτω είναι από το καινούργιο σπίτι.

Πήγα, λοιπόν, στο Google για να δω ποιος τελικά ήταν ο Claudio Arrau. Γεννήθηκε στην Χιλή και ως βιρτουόζος πιανίστας διακρίθηκε για το εύρος και μέγεθος του ρεπερτορίου του το οποίο κάλυπτε από Baroque μέχρι συνθέτες του 20ου αιώνα. Οι ερμηνείες του σε έργα των Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann. Liszt and Brahms τον έκαναν πασίγνωστο και τον καθιέρωσαν ως έναν από τους μεγαλύτερους πιανίστες του 20ου αιώνα.

Πέθανε το 1991 στο Murzzuschlag της Αυστρίας μια μέρα μετά από μια έκτακτης ανάγκης εγχείρηση για να αποφράξουν ένα μπλοκάρισμα στα έντερα.

Τον έθαψαν στην γενέτειρα του.

Ήταν 88 ετών, όσα και τα πλήκτρα του πιάνου που τόσο αγάπησε.

Today March 29th is World Piano Day!

It started a few years back by a group of piano lovers who wanted to dedicate a special day to celebrate this wonderful instrument.

They picked the 88th day of the year which symbolizes the 88 keys of the piano. On this day tens of cities around the world organize piano recitals and Athens is one of them.

So on this occasion I would like to introduce you to virtuoso pianist Claudio Arrau (1903-1991).

You may ask now where in the world did I unearth this pianist. Well, it was by chance in one of my frequent seaside walks in Douglaston, NY.

The path I follow on these walks is almost the same every time. However, as I walk I gaze at the sea watching the ducks, the swans and occasionally observing the seagulls when they are feeding. It’s fun to watch them as they swoop down and pick mussels and oysters amongst the rocks, then fly up a few meters and let them drop on the rocks. Sometimes they have to drop them twice before the oyster breaks or opens a bit. And this is how my walks go. They are very therapeutic as they clear my head allowing me to think and it’s common knowledge that I need the exercise!

One afternoon I noticed on the side of the street by the water -and kind of hidden by the car guard rail- a rock with a plaque on its front. It was a dedication to Claudio Arrau who was a long resident of Douglaston.

Across the street was his house -unknown to me then- which 5-6 years ago I saw being demolished and then watched the progress of a new one being built in its place by new owners. The photo here is of the new house.

So, I went and googled his name and found out that he was born in Chile, was a child prodigy and developed as one of the greatest piano players of the 20th century!

He became known for his vast repertoire spanning the Baroque to 20th century composers.

His interpretations of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms were memorable.

He died in Murzzuschlag, Austria from complications after an emergency operation performed to correct an intestinal blockage.

He was buried in his native city of Chillan, Chile.

He was 88 years old, just like the number of keys of his beloved piano!
