Ο Τσάρλυ Τσάπλιν -Σαρλώ καθ’ ημάς- πέθανε στο σπίτι του στην Ελβετία την ημέρα των Χριστουγέννων 1977. Ήταν 88 χρόνων. Με μια απλή τελετή θάφτηκε στο νεκροταφείο του Vevey.

Δυο μήνες περίπου αργότερα μια μέρα σαν και σήμερα, στις 2 Μαρτίου, ο τάφος του βρέθηκε άδειος και το φέρετρο εξαφανισμένο. Ύστερα απο λίγες μέρες, οι κλέφτες του φέρετρου ζήτησαν λύτρα 600.000 Ελβετικά φρανκα για να το επιστρέψουν. Η Ούνα, συζυγος του Τσάπλιν, αρνήθηκε κάθε διαπραγμάτευση λέγοντας: “Ο σύζυγός μου είναι στον ουρανό και την καρδιά μου”.

Ενδεκα εβδομάδες αργότερα οι κλέφτες είχαν συλληφθεί και το φέρετρο είχε βρεθεί σ’ ένα χωράφι με καλαμπόκι.
Ο κακόμοιρος ο Τσάρλυ Τσάπλιν θαφτηκε και πάλι στο ίδιο μέρος. Την φορά αυτήν όμως ο τάφος σκεπάστηκε με τσιμέντο για ευνόητους λόγους. Απ’ ό,τι ξέρουμε ο αγαπημένος μας κωμικός αναπαύεται απο τότε εν ειρήνη.

Charlie Chaplin dies at his home in Switzerland on Christmas

Day 1977 at the age of eighty-eight. A simple funeral was held four days later at the Anglican church in Vevey and the body was buried in the local cemetery.
About two months later, on a day like today, the grave was found empty and the coffin missing.
A few days later the thieves that had taken the coffin were demanding 600,000 Swiss francs for its return. Oona Chaplin refused to deal with them, saying, ‘My husband is in heaven and in my heart’.
After eleven weeks the thieves were arrested and the intact coffin was found buried in a cornfield.
As for poor Charlie, he was reburied in his original plot. This time, however, the family opted for a concrete coating over the grave to deter any future robberies. Since then, as far as anyone knows, the beloved comedian has been resting quietly in peace.
